Disclaimer: this blog post is so radical if you really know me that what you are about to read may cause heart palpitations.
So as I mentioned earlier, I saw the movie "Julie and Julia" last weekend and was inspired enough to go to the grocery store and buy fresh food. I'm not sure if you understand the importance of that last statement. I have lived on my own for more than 12 years and really the amount of times I have cooked is only a handful. I've actually cooked for others several times(very occasionally) but in general, I survive on a lot of meals out, friends' cooking, and pre-packaged meals. There I said it. Don't judge me! :) I'm definitely not a picky eater but also I don't eat all that much. I've been known to occasionally pig out but in general, I don't have a problem with portion control. In fact, there have been nights where I have forgotten to eat dinner. But I digress.
Anyway, I saw the movie was inspired to buy fresh food but when I got home, I really had no inspiration of what to do next. It's not that I didn't think I could cook. I follow directions like the best of them (most of the time!) But I work a lot, have odd hours, and cooking for one person is not all that fun. But yesterday, I had the perfect combination of time (I worked the early shift yesterday), motivation (not sure where it actually came from), and fresh ingredients. That rarely, if ever, happens so I took advantage of it.
For the record, I'm not attempting to blog about becoming a cook. That's already been done and turned into a movie. I just want to document the fact that I indeed made a meal. Using a recipe. From a cookbook. For myself. And I survived. However, I forgot to take a picture. In all the excitement and sense of accomplishment, I forgot to document my endeavor until I had put the leftovers in a plastic container and quite honestly, it wasn't all that appealing visually. So please just take me at my word. I promise I'm not lying.
So I'm sure you're all anxiously awaiting what my creation was. And there's an asterisk by "making it from scratch". It contained ravioli and no, I did not make my own ravioli. Baby steps. But basically it was creamy broccoli and ravioli. With some bacon pieces in there (I even made my own bacon bits!). Oh and a bunch of cheese. I'm pretty sure it doesn't qualify as "healthy" under pretty much anyone's definition since it involved two types of cheese but I'm okay with that. I decided to skip the cookies during this week's episode of Biggest Loser (a show that I'm completely addicted to!) so I can handle it. Oh and I've had salad for lunch three days this week. I practically deserve to eat whatever I want! :)
I have to admit, it was pretty tasty and surprisingly it only took 30 minutes to fix! I had such a sense of accomplishment that I might even do it again really soon. I didn't have that much for leftovers so eventually I'm going to need to eat again. Watch out Julia Child! Pretty sure you're going to have nothing on me and my mad cooking skills!

I'm still not sure I believe it. I've known you for nearly 7 years and all I've ever seen in your refrigerator was a jar of pickles. Although one time you did make a very yummy roast and shared some with the Murrays.
Buy the smallest portion of chicken breast (not frozen) next time you plan this recipe. Nuke the chicken in the microwave for about three minutes, dice it up, add it to your original recipe and you'll have an even tastier dish that will make left overs you can use again. Enjoyed your post!!
Yay Becky!! You are well on your way to becoming Julia. She BETTER watch out! I love to cook, sadly... it's my "creative" outlet these days... :)
