This past weekend was one of the biggest nights in Washington. Bigger than the Inauguration. Bigger than the State of the Union. It was the White House Correspondents' Dinner. A chance for all the "important" people in DC and LA and NY to come to a dinner with POTUS. There's really no better way to describe it than to say it's DC's prom. Anybody who is anybody is there (plus me) and all decked out to the nines. This year was even bigger because I'm not sure if you've noticed but the folks in Hollywood *LOVE* our POTUS. The stars were out in full force and I probably would have rather been home with my sister and brother in law. My main reason in going is that I didn't go last year because I was out of town and I wanted to make sure I stayed on the invite list for career-related reasons. Please don't get me wrong and take my lack of enthusiasm in any snobby way but I have been going to these dinners for years and they just don't excite me. Once I'm actually in the room, it's a great time and lots of fun but the anticipation is just not there for me. I don't go to a personal shopper to find a dress. I do my own hair and makeup (which isn't any different than any other day) and I avoid shoes of death so that I know I will be able to feel my feet in by the end of the night.
This year, my sister and brother in law were in town (more on that later in the post) and I had a marvelous time hanging out with them. I waited until about 15 minutes before my ride was coming to get me to decide what I was going to wear. Thank God I have been a bridesmaid numerous times (not quite 27 times but it's close) so I just chose the dress that looked the least bridesmaid-sy. It just so happened that it was the one I wore in my sister's wedding but there was no bias in the decision making, I swear. (I really didn't take many pictures but my friends did and when I steal them off of Facebook, I'll add them in here.)
Elaine and I met up and went to the dinner and got there much earlier than we anticipated. People were taking our pictures as we walked down the street and we just tried to avoid the protesters as much as we could. (As an aside, I really couldn't tell what they were protesting although one sign had the word "cheerleaders" on it. I almost got a picture with the sign since I was a cheerleader for one year in the 6th grade.) We arrived and it was a MADHOUSE!! There were so many people there, you could hardly breathe. The only redeeming part of it was that the celebrities were just as miserable as the rest of us. I walked in with Forrest Whitaker and a couple of other people who I'm sure were famous but I couldn't tell you who they were. Since I have a height disadvantage, I couldn't tell whose armpit-level I was at. After a few minutes of trying to maneuver through the mosh pit, we decided to go to the ballroom and find our table. We had great tables near the front. (Tyra Banks was sitting about two tables away from mine.) Stars were everywhere. You name them, they were there. I didn't get too excited about seeing any of them but as a collective group, it was quite an impressive showing.
This dinner is a chance for POTUS to be a little on the relaxed side so he got up there and told some jokes. Some of them were actually pretty funny. He does have great timing in delivering the jokes I will say. The comedienne, Wanda Sykes, was also funny although she stepped over the line a couple of times.
As for the actual dinner itself, it's really nothing to write home about. It was one small piece of steak and one small piece of fish and some weird potato concoction and four pieces of asparagus. They made an announcement at the beginning of dinner saying that we wouldn't have dessert and they had donated the proceeds to feed hungry children. Personally, I would have rather donated the salad portion as it was just some cheese on some weeds with a small weird gourd on top. Oh and some salami. I'm sure there was some fancy name that it was technically called but I could have done without and enjoyed a piece of cheesecake in return! :)
I didn't go to any of the after-prom parties because I wanted to see Katherine and Mark before they went to bed (since they were leaving early on Sunday morning) so I can't tell you all these awesome stories about colleagues getting drunk, running into any more famous people, etc. I'll save that experience for next year! All in all I actually did have fun while I was there and it's good to see your colleagues outside the work situation every once in a while. I am also glad that this is only one night a year (well technically there is another correspondent's dinner thrown by a different group in June but it's not as "exclusive" as Saturday night's shin-dig).
The rest of the weekend was even better as I got to see Katherine and Mark. I hadn't seen them since Thanksgiving and it was just great to spend time with them! They are preggers and I can't wait for them to be parents and give me another niece/nephew!! So this was likely the last visit before kids. It was definitely a full weekend! They like to keep things moving!! On Thursday, we spent time in the rain in Old Town just hanging out! On Friday, we went to the American History museum and then to Ford's Theater. Later that night, we drove up to Baltimore for the Orioles game (they definitely didn't plan their trip around the Nationals' schedule but next time!)
On Saturday, we went to possibly the best museum of all times in my world- the Newseum. They just reopened within the last year and I hadn't been. I swear I put no pressure on K and Mark to go. It was totally their choice. But I cannot lie. I become a HUGE nerd in that place. It's almost a little too close to home in some cases. It's a great museum and lots of information but it's almost like going to a museum about your own life. I have no idea if that actually conveys what I'm trying to say but hopefully you can figure out what I mean. The visit actually inspired me to be even MORE of a pack rack in case they ever need to make a display about me! :) The highlight of my time there was looking through the exhibits and trying to find people I knew. The surprise of that little exercise is that I was looking at one picture in particular and lo and behold, I saw myself!!! How crazy is that?!? I'm pretty sure that absolutely no one will ever find what picture I am talking about but just in case, I will pay a HUGE reward to anyone who can. (Katherine, you are not eligible.) Ok, I might just break down and post the picture because it's pretty funny!!
Early Sunday morning, I had to say goodbye to Katherine and Mark after a lot of fun! Then after church, I had to recover from my weekend with a good, long nap. I know the weather was absolutely gorgeous but I couldn't help it. I did end the weekend with a long walk with my friend Mary Jane. The incentive was that it was to Baskin 'n Robbins. That just made for the perfect ending to a great, great weekend!
